If you have thought about writing a book and are sitting on an idea that you haven’t executed, I’d like to encourage you to get started right now. Today. And I believe there are five very practical reasons why right now is the best time to write your book.
5 Reasons To Write Your Book Now
COVID-19 has a lot of people on edge. They are anxious, they are scared, they are stressed out, they are frustrated, and they are lonely. And it’s nobody’s fault. It just crept in unawares and took everyone by surprise. But that does not mean we are defeated. In fact, it is very difficult to defeat a people who are focused on overcoming every obstacle no matter how difficult.
To be sure, there are times in American history when things were worse off than they are now. But if your life has been upended by the coronavirus pandemic and you find yourself at home, away from the office, away from your employees, away from your customers, and maybe your business has been shut down, I’d like to encourage you to write a book. You’ve likely already thought about it. Now is the right time to do it. Here’s why.
- Your business is closed – You are not working your business because your state government has shut down all nonessential businesses. If this is true, then you’ve got time on your hands. You are likely at home, planning your next move, hoping the government will re-open business. But why wait? You could be actively doing something productive right now–like writing your book.
- You’re cooped up at home with nothing else to do – Since you’re at home, bingeing on Netflix, you might as well write your book. This is the perfect time to do so because writing your book will give you greater clarity about your purpose–for your life, in your business, and in your relationships. Quit dreaming about being an author and just do it while you have the time.
- Everyone else is cooped up at home with nothing else to do, and reading is a great way to pass the time – Not only are you cooped up at home with nothing much to do, but so is everyone else. Writing and publishing a book could be a community service. Everyone is looking for something to occupy their time and take their minds off of the crisis. Your book could be the thing that does it.
- You have valuable knowledge that will be even more valuable after the crisis is over – Business knowledge does not go away. It is always useful. Steven Covey wrote his famous book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” in 1989. Thirty-one years later, people are still quoting from it. As I write this blog post, it’s ranked #108 in the Business Education & Reference category of books at Amazon. Excellent thought leadership has a long shelf life. Your knowledge will be valuable to your audience long after they’ve forgotten the coronavirus pandemic. Write your book now while you have the time.
- While you’re home, you can start promoting your book on podcasts and guest blogging opportunities – Since you have time now, you can begin promoting your book on podcasts and through guest blogging opportunities. As you write your book, you can also promote it. You don’t have to wait until your business has opened back up again and you no longer have the time. Do it now.
The best time to write a book is always the moment the book is relevant and you have the time to pursue the interest. Stop procrastinating.
The Real Benefits of Being an Author
If you are a public speaker, it’s likely that you aren’t doing much public speaking right now. Maybe you’ve pivoted to putting on webinars (if not, you should). Maybe you’ve started a podcast tour. Maybe you’re doing more guest blogging. But you should take this time to write your next book. The reason is because you now have something else to write about–how about writing about how you overcame the pandemic crisis and obstacles established by social distancing to continue your public speaking?
If you are an executive and your business has been shut down, you can position yourself as an authority by writing your book now so that you can share it with your audience when your business opens up again.
If you are a thought leader, you should know these five benefits to writing and authoring a book:
- Authoring a book establishes you as an authority in the mind of your audience. If you have authored a book, you must know what you’re talking about.
- A book makes a great calling card.
- A book enhances your message. Whether you are a public speaker, a YouTube personality, a podcaster, or just a bag of hot air (I’m joking!), a book reinforces your message with your audience.
- It can be a means to passive income, another revenue channel for you.
- A book can also promote your business. In many ways, it can promote your business better than anything else because it demonstrates your specialized knowledge and expertise.
I go into more detail on each of these benefits to book authoring in my little pamphlet “Why I Wrote This Book.” You can download it for free.
